Election 2002: City Equality Questionnaire

During the recent discussion over the amendment of the City Charter, one proposal (then proposition 20) would provide a non-discrimination clause for the appointments of people to boards and commissions.

The proposal did not include sexual orientation, and a request was made to the Mayor and City Council members to include this.

At the public hearing this request was received favorably from the mayor and council, however after some discussion, including some incorrect advise from the city attorney and assistant city manager, the council decided to modify the proposal to relate only to federal and state laws (something which does not cover sexual orientation). It was further suggested that this be pursued through a city ordinance, as it would provide a greater opportunity to consider this in more detail.

Proposition 19 (formerly proposition 20) will make that change to the city charter if passed by the voters on May 4.

In preparation for this issue to be handled through an ordinance, FriscoPride has asked the mayoral candidates if they would "actively support a non-discrimination ordinance (inclusive of sexual orientation) being adopted by the City Council in relation to council appointments (ie. Boards and Commissions)." Visit here for responses.

Also, a thread has been started on the Frisco-Online Community Forum, in relation to the consideration of an ordinance that extends the protection for gay men and lesbians by the City of Dallas (see side bar).

The following candidates for the City Council have publicly supported a non-discrimination ordinance being adopted in Frisco:
