Brief History

After a review of the City Charter in 2001-2002, it was recommend to amend the discrimination clause to include most forms of discrimination, with the exception of sexual orientation. Approaches were made to council to amend this to include sexual orientation, however council made the decision to revise the wording (on the advice of legal counsel) to refer to existing state and federal laws (which excludes sexual orientation at this point). It should be noted that the City Charter Review Commission actually included sexual orientation in the original wording, however legal opinion suggested its removal. Voters passed the proposition on May 4, 2002.
